Substation upgrade aims to improve electricity reliability
Mason Substation upgrade aims to improve electricity reliability and strengthen Vryheid's power network.
The Mason Substation is undergoing a major upgrade as part of the municipality’s electricity infrastructure improvement programme, according to the municipality’s response to a residents’ petition.
Substation upgrade under way
The AbaQulusi Local Municipality says work is under way to strengthen Vryheid’s electricity network through the upgrade of the Mason Substation.
The project forms part of the municipality’s broader strategy to improve ageing electricity infrastructure and reduce the impact of vandalism and cable theft.
Third transformer to increase capacity
According to the municipality, the upgrade includes the installation of a third transformer, which will increase the substation’s capacity and improve the resilience of the electricity network.
The municipality acknowledged that much of its electricity infrastructure has exceeded its intended lifespan, resulting in more frequent failures and increased maintenance challenges.
It also identified vandalism and cable theft as major obstacles to maintaining a stable electricity supply.
Supporting future electricity reliability
In addition to the substation upgrade, the municipality plans to strengthen protection systems in key areas of town as part of its long-term strategy to safeguard critical infrastructure.
The municipality said the Mason Substation project will play an important role in improving the reliability of electricity supply to Vryheid and surrounding communities while supporting future infrastructure upgrades.
