Newcastle Municipality says it has reached a defining milestone in its pursuit of sustainable economic growth and investment attraction following overwhelming community support for the R7-billion Newcastle Wind Power Project.

According to the municipality, the project is a landmark renewable energy investment that will establish KwaZulu-Natal’s first large-scale wind power project.

In a statement, they said the proposed development, situated in Charlestown, Ward 1, represents one of the most significant private-sector investments ever secured by the municipality.

“Beyond strengthening South Africa’s transition towards renewable energy, the project positions Newcastle as a provincial leader in clean energy innovation while unlocking unprecedented socio-economic opportunities for local communities, businesses and future generations.”

Project expected to boost jobs and local economy

Construction is expected to begin in August and will take an estimated two years to complete. During this period, the project is expected to inject billions of rand into the local economy while creating substantial employment opportunities.

The municipality said the investment is expected to stimulate economic activity across numerous sectors, creating opportunities for local contractors; suppliers; small, medium and micro enterprises (SMMEs); transport operators; accommodation establishments; catering businesses; security companies; and professionals in the civil engineering, electrical engineering, construction and related industries.

These developments were welcomed during a stakeholder engagement in Charlestown, where residents met with municipal leadership to discuss the implementation of the project.

The engagement was chaired by Newcastle Municipality Speaker Thengi Zulu and attended by Mayor Xolani Dube, ward councillors, members of council, representatives of the project developer, Mulilo Energy, business stakeholders and community members.

Residents welcome investment opportunity

Residents were given an opportunity to engage directly with project representatives, ask questions, and gain a better understanding of the anticipated social and economic benefits of the development.

The atmosphere throughout the engagement was characterised by optimism, enthusiasm and anticipation, with community members overwhelmingly welcoming the proposed investment as a once-in-a-generation opportunity to transform the local economy, create sustainable employment and improve livelihoods.

According to the statement, many residents expressed excitement about the opportunities the project could create for young people, local entrepreneurs, skilled artisans and emerging businesses, while recognising its long-term economic benefits.

Municipal leadership further noted that the project is expected to create significant opportunities for local participation throughout its implementation.

“In addition to direct employment, the development is anticipated to generate increased demand for goods and services across multiple sectors, thereby strengthening local supply chains, supporting enterprise development and promoting inclusive economic growth.”

The mayor described the investment as a defining moment in Newcastle’s economic history.

“The Newcastle Wind Power Project represents far more than a renewable energy investment; it represents hope, jobs, economic growth and a brighter future for our people.

“As the first large-scale wind energy project of its kind in KwaZulu-Natal, this historic R7-billion investment firmly positions Newcastle at the forefront of South Africa’s green economy.

“It demonstrates growing investor confidence in our municipality and creates meaningful opportunities for local businesses, skilled professionals, emerging entrepreneurs and especially our young people.

“Our commitment is to ensure that every stage of this development delivers lasting socio-economic benefits to our communities through transparency, collaboration and inclusive participation.”

Cllr uMntwana Thengamehlo Zulu welcomed the positive response from residents and commended the people of Charlestown for embracing constructive dialogue and meaningful participation throughout the engagement.

He reaffirmed council’s commitment to ensuring that communities remain central partners in development initiatives aimed at improving residents’ quality of life while advancing sustainable local economic development.
