The South African Museums Association (SAMA) Conference took place late last week at the historic Talana Museum, bringing together museum professionals, heritage practitioners, researchers and cultural leaders from KwaZulu-Natal, Gauteng and beyond.

Museums as places of unity

Opening the conference, Endumeni Mayor Cllr Mcebo Mkhize welcomed delegates and said Talana Museum was an ideal venue for this year’s theme, “Museums Uniting a Divided World”.

He described the museum as a place where South Africa’s diverse history comes together, from its indigenous heritage and the Battle of Talana to the coal mining industry and Mahatma Gandhi’s Satyagraha Movement.

The mayor explained that the name Talana, meaning “the shelf where precious items are stored”, reflects the museum’s role in preserving the country’s shared memories, experiences and aspirations.

He said museums have an increasingly important role in a world facing political divisions, socio-economic inequality, environmental challenges and rapid technological change.

“Museums are not simply places that preserve artefacts. They are civic spaces that encourage dialogue, reconciliation, education and social cohesion,” he said.

Sharing knowledge and preserving heritage

Mkhize said museums provide trusted spaces where history can be presented honestly, cultural heritage celebrated and meaningful conversations encouraged. He added that they are uniquely placed to bridge divides, promote understanding and inspire unity.

The conference will feature presentations, discussions and knowledge-sharing sessions aimed at exploring new ways to preserve and promote South Africa’s rich and diverse heritage.

Hosting the conference further strengthens Endumeni’s reputation as a destination of historical and cultural significance while showcasing Talana Museum as one of South Africa’s leading heritage sites.
