One Home, One Garden transforms Hlobane on Mandela Day
Hlobane residents celebrated Mandela Day by launching a food security gardening initiative for 50 households.
The community of Hlobane in the Skomplazi area came together to celebrate Mandela Day by dedicating 67 minutes to community service and empowerment.
The event saw community members, Zakhele Selby Xulu and various stakeholders join hands to launch the One Home, One Garden Drive, an initiative aimed at promoting household food security. A total of 50 households benefited from the programme.
Stakeholders lend their support
Phakamani Mthethwa from Sunbake encouraged community members to participate in community projects, saying they play a significant role in personal development. Sunbake also donated 50 loaves of brown bread to community members.
Sebenzile Kunene from Old Mutual appealed to the area’s Induna to partner with the company to ensure every community member has funeral cover. Old Mutual donated 150 spinach, cabbage and beetroot seedlings to support the gardening initiative.
Phakamani Gwala from the Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs (EDTEA) Empowerment Section expressed support for the One Home, One Garden Drive, saying it has the potential to help alleviate poverty. EDTEA donated 800 spinach, beetroot and pumpkin seedlings, which were distributed to beneficiaries, including Hlobane Crèche and Hlobane Primary School.
Community welcomes the initiative
Lihle Masondo from Thuthukani Crèche expressed gratitude for the initiative.
“I would like to thank Mr Xulu for coming to assist us during Mandela Day by establishing a garden. We also appreciate the support from the stakeholders and the community at large. They reminded us of the importance of using the land to grow our own food instead of always buying it. Thank you very much for your wonderful work,” she said.
Community member Sindi Mpanza said the Mandela Day event had a positive impact on residents.
“As the Hlobane Skomplazi community, we were very happy to celebrate Nelson Mandela Day. It was a wonderful event and we learnt many things that we did not know before. We thank everyone who came to host and educate us,” she said.

The Induna and Zakhele Xulu thanked the community and all the stakeholders for dedicating their time and making sacrifices to celebrate Mandela Day while investing in the future of the community.
