Two prominent Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) members in Endumeni have resigned, citing internal divisions and a breakdown in governance as the reasons for their departure.

‘Residents deserve better’

In an interview with the Courier, Willie Steenberg, who had been earmarked as the IFP’s Ward 2 candidate, and Jacques Greyvenstein, expected to contest Ward 7, confirmed they will stand in the November 2026 local government elections under a different political party.

Steenberg said they had campaigned enthusiastically for the IFP because they believed they could help restore good governance and strengthen the party’s representation on council.

“After much soul-searching, we realised we could no longer serve effectively within the IFP. The infighting, the inability to find common ground to pass even a simple budget, and the influence of questionable advisers are hurting the residents of Endumeni,” he said.

Greyvenstein described the decision as difficult but necessary.

“We owe it to the voters to be honest. We want to serve the people, not become caught up in internal political battles that prevent the municipality from functioning.”

Looking to the future

The pair revealed that two political parties had already approached them and that they expected to announce their new political home shortly.

Steenberg said many residents had told them: “We will vote for you, but not the party you represent.”

Both men said their focus remains on improving service delivery and restoring accountability at the municipality.

“Our towns are deteriorating, service delivery has collapsed in many areas, and too many decisions are influenced by people who are not accountable to residents,” Steenberg said.

Greyvenstein added that they intended to contest all wards in Endumeni and could also appear on the Umzinyathi District proportional representation ballot.
