Vryheid High School has welcomed learners, parents and staff back for the start of Term 3 after a busy June/July holiday period that saw several learners represent their school and district at provincial and regional sporting events.

The school said it looks forward to another exciting and successful term after learners returned from a well-deserved break.

Rugby players represent NKZN

Three Under-15 rugby players, Enzokuhle Mqabi, Alondwe Nombede and Abonga Mkhize, were selected to represent Northern KwaZulu-Natal (NKZN) at Rhino Week, which was held in Vanderbijlpark from July 7 to 11.

Hockey stars shine

In hockey, Jaden Dunn represented the KZN Inland Under-18 Country Districts A Team, while Suhail Dhooma played for the KZN Inland Under-18 Country Districts B Team at the North Regional Tournament in Hilton.

The school’s younger players also impressed. Simphiwe Zulu represented the KZN Inland Under-13 B Team and Yamkela Sikhakhane the KZN Inland Under-13 C Team at the Under-13 Central Regional Tournament in Gauteng.

Yamkela and his teammates finished as runners-up after narrowly losing the final in a penalty shoot-out.

Netball success continues

Netball players Nongcebo Mhlongo and Promise Odekpe represented Zululand at the TNC Netball Tournament, held at Dr EG Jansen High School in Boksburg from July 6 to 10.

Following her outstanding performances, Nongcebo earned selection for the Under-21 team that will compete at the SPAR Championships in Cape Town.

The school congratulated her on what it described as a well-deserved achievement.

Cricketers gain valuable experience

The school’s First Team girls’ cricket side travelled to Dundee to compete in the Super 8 Cricket Tournament shortly after the new term began.

The tournament provided valuable experience as the team prepares for the 2026 cricket season.

Personal best in road running

On July 25, Chardaé Jordaan competed in the AbaQulusi Plaza Fortress Running Series 10km race, where she achieved a personal best and finished third overall in her age category.

The school praised her dedication and determination and said it looks forward to seeing her continue to develop in long-distance running.

Looking ahead

Vryheid High School congratulated all the learners who represented the school during the holidays, saying their commitment, discipline and passion continue to make the school proud.

Upcoming events include cricket fixtures against Ladysmith and Hoërskool Pionier on July 30, the Eco-Club Community Clean-Up on July 31 and the Vryheid High School Soccer Tournament on August 1.
