Learners at Masumpa Primary School had a hands-on lesson in fire safety and emergency response during the school’s Career Day, with Okhahlamba Local Municipality’s Fire & Emergency Services officials leading the engagement.

The learners were introduced to the role of emergency services in protecting communities as they learned about fire prevention, disaster preparedness and the correct procedures for reporting emergencies.

Firefighting in action

A practical firefighting demonstration was one of the highlights of the day, capturing the children’s attention while giving them an opportunity to see emergency response in action.

This awareness initiative comes as the municipality enters the fire season, when dry conditions and strong winds can increase the risk of veld and structural fires.

Residents are urged to take extra care around open flames, never leave fires unattended, ensure that fires are completely extinguished, and avoid making fires during windy conditions. Children should also be taught about the dangers of playing with matches, lighters and other sources of ignition.

Inspiring future careers

Beyond fire safety, the Career Day exposed the learners to career opportunities in fire and emergency services, disaster management and other areas of public service.

Okhahlamba Local Municipality commended the learners for their enthusiasm and participation, and thanked Masumpa Primary School for hosting the event and encouraging young people to explore different career paths.

The municipality remains committed to strengthening disaster awareness and preparedness in communities, while equipping young people with knowledge that can help keep themselves, their families and their communities safe.
