Umzinyathi Education offices temporarily closed over safety concerns
The closure of the Dundee education offices has put into the spotlight the state of Government offices in KZN.
Safety concerns over the deteriorating condition of the Umzinyathi District Office in Dundee have forced the temporary closure of the local Education offices.
The Department of Employment & Labour intervened after occupational health and safety concerns were raised about the building at 40 Wilson Street, with staff subsequently notified of the closure.
The South African Democratic Teachers Union (SADTU) confirmed the closure, saying it followed directives from the Department of Labour and concerns about the condition of government education offices in the province.
SADTU said it had repeatedly warned the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education about dilapidated offices that were not being properly maintained or repaired.
The union said the Umzinyathi closure was not isolated, pointing to the department’s provincial head office, closed in November last year, and the Zululand office in Ulundi.
It also warned that district offices in Umlazi, King Cetshwayo and uThukela were in poor condition and could face similar action if inspected.
Concerns over government offices
The closure highlights growing concerns about public sector workplaces and the impact poor infrastructure can have on employees and service delivery.
SADTU called on the Education Department to prioritise employee safety while ensuring the closure does not disrupt support to schools in the district.
The union did not provide details of the defects identified at the Dundee building or specify what work is required before the prohibition can be lifted.
No reopening date confirmed
There was no confirmed reopening date publicly available at the time of publication. The office must meet occupational health and safety requirements before normal operations can resume.
The closure comes as government departments seek alternative accommodation for some Dundee offices.
In July, KwaZulu-Natal Public Works advertised for suitable office accommodation for the Department of Sport, Arts & Culture’s Umzinyathi District Office, requiring health and safety compliance certificates before occupation.
The Education Department has yet to announce a reopening date for the Umzinyathi District Office.
