Amajuba High gave their matric learners a fairytale ending to their high school career at the school’s farewell on July 24 with a thoughtful and imaginative theme: ‘The Adventures of the Class of 2026’.

William Shakespeare said, “Life is a book, and there are a thousand pages I have not yet read.”

This metaphor for a journey of endless discovery, a life full of unexperienced adventures, future chapters, and uncharted territories waiting to be explored, is exactly what Magda Blackler had in mind when conceptualising the unique theme for the matric farewell.

“Our learners started their journey at Amajuba in Grade R and each year up until now, when they are finishing Grade 12, is like a new chapter of their lives that they shared with us. We wanted to reflect that the pages in the figurative ‘book’ of Amajuba High, which we named ‘The Adventures of the Class of 2026’, tells the story of their lives,”Blackler explained.

“A matric farewell is important. It’s the last time our learners can come together and have fun as children before they enter the adult world,” Blackler pointed out. “We are very proud of what an amazing event it was. The teamwork among the organisers was excellent and the learners really enjoyed themselves.”

Bringing the theme to life

Speaking about the effort that went into turning the theme into a tangible reality, Blackler mentioned art and culture teacher, Engela Smit, who painted the photo backdrop to look like the pages of a book.

“The backdrop was painted to look like two pages of an open book with the silhouettes of a child growing up. Instead of the castle that the prince and princesses get at the end of a fairytale, we decided to have an illustration of the school building,” said Blackler. “Smit really helped materialise the idea I had in mind.”

Asked if she could give the Newcastle Advertiser a sneak peek at next year’s theme, all Blackler would let slip was that the event promises to be a colourful affair.

“If it wasn’t for God that blessed us with the talents we possess, things like this would not be possible,” Blackler concluded.
