Madam

The behaviour displayed by municipal employees during their strike is really disgusting and requires castigation and clearly depicts a picture that much still requires to be done and said.

Firstly, the labour unions need to teach their members that is unacceptable and illegal to violate others’ rights while in the process of exercising their right to strike (Chapter 2, Section 23 of the Constitution of RSA).

Section 24 clearly states that we all have a right to a healthy environment and that the environment has a right to be protected. This behaviour clearly paints the picture that much still needs to be done by politicians (in their constituencies) and society at large, in teaching people that this democracy came not only with freedom but with responsibilities too.

Lastly, I want to commend Lieutenant-Colonel Neethling and Warrant Officer Rose for doing their work in arresting the culprits who committed this barbaric act of littering. Hopefully this will teach others that there are proper avenues that can be utilised to voice concerns.
