Flood warnings would be easier with shorter reeds

During the rainy season, Finnemore Street residents often fear their houses will be flooded by the Ncandu River, which runs alongside the street.

While not much can be done to stop the water from overflowing, a resident who wishes to remain anonymous, feels that reeds and grass should be cut on a regular basis.

“The grass and reeds are so long, you cannot see when the river is about to overflow until it is virtually too late,” she said.

The resident felt there were ways to keep the grass short, although the area was not relly accessible to tractors.

“They can use weed-eaters and if it is maintained on a regular basis, there won’t be much work for them to keep the area clean. It would just be so much easier to keep an eye on the rising waters and know if our homes would be flooded,” she thought.

The municipality was contacted for comment, but none was forthcoming at the time of the article going to print.
