OPINION: ‘It is time to stop whining and start working.’

'Blame, blame, blame but don't do anything to hasten the change you want to see.' Anti Couch-Potato challenges Newcastle to do more in a letter to the editor.

Madam – What a disgrace!

It sickens me to read the paper each week and bear witness to a once beautiful town deteriorate so much!

Murders, rapes, kidnappings, rituals in the graveyard, poor roads, and prostitutes conducting their business in front of children, in a public park! It makes me question this town I grew up in and love with all my heart. Who is to blame?

It’s easy to pass the buck and say that this person should be doing this and that department is in charge of that, but it’s like all things government in the end – full of ideas and grand schemes but with no implementation to speak of.

Twenty years from now we will look back at this time and wonder where it all went wrong. We will ask ourselves why we didn’t do more to secure a better environment for our children and grandchildren. We will lament the fact that we sat back and waited for someone else to take responsibility.

We complain about the sewerage situation but when last did you bother getting into contact with your ward councillor like the mayor is always suggesting? You post photos on social media and hope to indulge in a nice round of municipal bashing but you’re content with just that – blame, blame, blame but don’t do anything to hasten the change you want to see.

Or the odd BBM starts going out late at night, warning people to beware of this and that but there’s never any actual resolution. Have we now become a nation of whiners and lazy bystanders? What happened to the good old days when people would actually come together to fix problems? Now we just moan about it from the comfort of our couches or from behind cellphones and desks.

I challenge you, Newcastle, to stop whining and start working!
