Sir,
The decision by Umzinyathi Municipality to cancel the six kilolitres of free water per household has not been challenged by the other political parties. This is very disturbing.
The statement from Umzinyathi says that only the indigent will receive the free water every month. However, what is the definition of ‘indigent’? My gut tells me that you will have to live in a township.
This will exclude many needy people who live in the so-called ‘town areas’. Poverty is all-encompassing, and the other political parties – other than the ANC, which is in the majority – did not bother to challenge this decision, and this brings into focus their ability to make rational decisions. There should have been extensive public meetings to discuss and inform ratepayers of this change, which impacts all pockets.
It appears as if our so-called councillors at Umzinyathi are themselves very comfortable, and do not bother asking for input from the very people who work to pay their salaries. The other thing they appear to be good at is blocking Victoria Street with their fancy SUVs every time there is a meeting. They again are happy to make life difficult for the ordinary resident while they just carry on.
Very strange, this so-called democracy…
