ASK THE MAYOR: Bills, bad roads and ward issues

This week, Mayor Afzul Rehman tackles exorbitant bills, the poor state of Jenkyn Street and accountability of ward councillors.

Mr Mayor, I would like to find out from you directly. You said you personally commit yourself to the cause of looking into what it happening with our bills and would hire additional staff if you need to in the Advertiser this week. How exactly do you plan to do this, can you give a time frame, or are we looking at another shock with our next electricity bill? I thank you. Mr S Maharaj

I plan to do this immediately, come up with a schedule of meter reading, which can be advertised so that the public are aware which days their areas are being read. I have a few other idea which I will discuss with the team before pronouncing on it.

Sir, the condition of Jenkyn st wich was marked for rehabilitation is actually quite pathetic. Please take a drive there and see hw badly the contractors have just patched up the road. It’s just as bad to drive on now as before and progress is very slow. I live on the St and see the workers lying under trees for hours at a time. Is this where the money for the road is going? They don’t work during the day and then work on weekends is this to claim overtime? Please investigate and let the public know.

There seems to be an issue with the service provider and I have asked the Department to provide me with a full report.

Greetings to u Mr Mayor. I live in ward 4 and want to know who i can contact as our ward cllr is not readily available to discuss issues pertainin to the ward?

Well it can only be the ward Cllr, please contact my office if you need assistance and cannot find the ward Cllr.
