Retro movie fans might notice the significance of today’s date, the day Marty McFly and Doc Emmett Brown jumped to in Back to the Future Part II.
Yes, we’ve reached a merging of the timelines.
The second film in the trilogy depicted a radically-different 2015, from flying cars and autonomous trash cans to power-lacing shoes.

Hovercam
This would be a treat for journalists. The advent of the GoPro and development of public-use unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) take us one step closer to this reality.
Power-lacing shoes
It has been reported Nike has applied for a patent, some 25 years on, to produce the kicks Marty McFly wore in the movie. We wait in anticipation…
Weather control
Managing the weather would be great (so long, drought), and research is ongoing. Increasing rainfall is one thing, controlling conditions is another altogether.
Dehydrated foods
While the notion of dehydrated pizzas may sound peculiar, dehydrated foods and rations can be found in the military and with astronauts. Think Meals Ready to Eat, or MREs.
Video phones and VR glasses
Once unbelievable, this is another prediction which came true. Phone cameras have paved the way for video calls, while devices like Oculus VR make virtual reality a… Reality.
Hoverboards
This futuristic skateboard-on-helium was all but a dream in 1989, but now a few devices have laid claim to levitating a short way off the ground. Sweet!
Flying cars
The question begs answering – where are the flying cars? We’re on the right path, with companies developing ‘road-ready aircraft’, but likely remain a few years away from true flying cars.
