Here’s what the municipality should do…

To report a water leak in your area, phone the Newcastle Municipality on 086 014 4144.

Madam – Saving water.

I would like to suggest that our Municipality could do ‘Their Bit’ as well, and perhaps in the following way; Deploy inspectors to go to every hotel, bar and restaurant to check for leaking cisterns and taps in all their toilets and rooms, do the same at all public conveniences, print hand-outs and distribute them, especially in all ‘not so posh’ areas, (not all of the people buy the newspaper and I quite believe that many are not even aware of the problem we are having.)

Check all the streets for broken pipes and water running freely. At present the latter is happening in Montague street near Harding str.

Two or so weeks ago it was in Peacock street, and that is only what I can see from my little perspective. But most important of all; there should be fines; wagging a finger helps little.

Fines!

That’s my favourite; fines for wasting water or even for using too much. There are too many people who will say ‘So what, I can afford it’ and ‘let the Other One close His tap’.

And as un-patriotic as this attitude may seem – it actually is.

P. S It must be possible, using records, to eastablish whether a consumer is actually cutting down on consumption.

P.S. II I would like to point a finger even at THE ADVERTISER; The number to phone and report water leaks should be prominently shown in every issue.
