Madam – I read your story online about the pensioner who fought off armed robbers so he could save his family.
While the story itself is one of courage and bravery, I can’t help but feel sad that this is what South Africa has come to. We have to look over our shoulders all the time, worrying about when we are going to become nothing more than a statistic.
I am glad the man and his family are safe, but so many things could have gone wrong while he was defending himself.
Crime has gotten so out of hand in our town that an innocent family could have been wiped out thanks to those criminals. And for what?
The police are honestly not the biggest help and in an emergency situation they are not the first people we call. No, this honour goes to the security companies and neighbourhood watches we emply, because we know at least they can actually help.
I am urging Newcastillians to be vigilant, always. Protect yourself with increased security and always know your surroundings. Be careful out there.
Constant vigilance
