Winning Letter: Don’t ignore the heroes in your community

In idolising celebrities and public figures, we often ignore the true heroes right on our back porch.

Madam –

We often look up to those in public eye, elevating them to the status of role models and icons.

In idolising celebrities and public figures, we often ignore the true heroes right on our back porch.

In an article titled, “An insulin look at diabetes”, the community was introduced to Shanila Manilal.

Suffering from diabetes for three decades, Shanila’s story blew my mind.

I’m puzzled by how positive and energetic she comes across. Despite facing what most consider a ‘death sentence’, she still manages to force a smile.

By just looking at her, I cannot help but feel inspired!

As ‘cheesy’ as it may sound, reading about her journey forced me to reevaluate my life choices, and take the plunge to eat cleaner and live healthier.

As Shanila continues on a path 40 years in the making, I wish her nothing but the best.

I hope God blesses her and keeps her for many more years to come, as she clearly has so much more to offer.

To my fellow fast food munching, beer drinking fanatics, I encourage you to take a long, hard look at yourselves.

Comfort food and drinks packed with sugar might make you feel better now, but the feeling is short-lived, trust me.

Soon, you’ll begin to regret every stupid decision, and find yourself writing a ‘Letter to the Editor’ warning others not to go down the same rotten path.

Prevention really is better than cure, wouldn’t you say?
