Through the medium of your newspaper, we would like to appeal to the municipality and the Roads Department regarding the appalling state of the roads in and around Estcourt. We regularly drive the Loskop road out of town and it is only a matter of time until this road claims another life!
1. The verges have not been cut for two seasons, impairing visibility of oncoming traffic, stationary vehicles, and possible animals/humans walking in the very long and thick grass. The verge barriers are completely hidden from view in some places by the long grass, along with all the litter thrown into the verges.
2. Sand, stones and grass, etc fill the gutters and encroach on the road in various places especially near Sasko and the Ennersdale bridge. This means water (frequently from burst pipes in this area) cannot flow down the gutters and drains causing huge puddles in the road – a treacherous hazard with oncoming traffic and especially at night!
3. Street lights and road markings are almost non-existent from Clover to the traffic department – especially dangerous on a wet night with oncoming lights and poor visibility.
4. Potholes are deep and treacherous and trying to avoid them is impossible with oncoming traffic and they are not visible when filled with water.
Sadly ALL the roads leading from Estcourt are in a similar dangerous state! How can any of us, including our leaders, be proud of OUR town when we live with conditions like these?
Now over the Easter holiday season, our visitors and tourists have been met by a neglected, shabby and unkempt sad little town.
