An industry drowning in a sea of piracy

Video shops closing down could be the start of losing all our fun

Editor – How many of you support the last remaining DVD rental shops in Ladysmith? There aren’t many left, are there?

Do you ever wonder why or consider that it could be the result of a disturbing trend? The trend I refer to is the illegal downloading of movies.

Ah, was that a flash of familiarity in your eyes?

Let’s face it, there are few if any of us who haven’t downloaded or at least watched a downloaded movie or two, so let’s not claim to be saints.

However, when everyone is choosing the “cyber pirate” route all the time, at the expense of the local DVD shop, then I think we’re walking a slippery slope.

All these shops will die if they don’t do business with the movie watchers of our town.

In a town as lacking in entertainment as this one is, do you want to see all the “video shops” disappear and become extinct?

Not a pleasant thought, at least to me!

There’s nothing like the thrill of finding something new on the shelves that takes your fancy! Who knows, they might have even thrown in some cool special features you won’t get to see on that copy of yours.

All that will remain will be the shady characters with their bags full of pirated stock (most of it not great quality either). It’s okay to support their livelihood and not the industry itself that gives us hours upon hours of escapist entertainment?

Yes, Hollywood actors and their ilk earn wicked sums of money and what they do isn’t exactly brain surgery. But what they do rips us away from our mundane lives for an hour and a half (or more) at a time. What would we do without the next distraction in our lives?

Video shops closing down could be the start of losing all our fun and entertainment… Music shops could be next… Start thinking about it!
