Sir
Many thanks for the excellent coverage on the terrifying situation regarding the pollution of water as per last week’s Courier.
It is shocking to think that effluent is pumped seemingly without bother into the Steenkoolspruit and other streams.
If it is not our sewage, then it is the continual dumping of domestic waste into rivers like the Steenkoolspruit.
Why is there no respect for the environment? South Africa was once such a pristine country – towns like Dundee are akin to being open air urinals.
Why do the authorities not do something about this instead of those never-ending imbizos and chicken parties that are just talk shops? Why not get down and do some real work like clean up the mess in our town?
But it is not only our rivers that are dying because of man’s stupidity. A trip down to the Oval sports ground on Sunday afternoon was unpleasant. Hundreds of lotto tickets (the cards that one fills out) had been scattered around. There is some kind of security guard there but he seems pretty impervious to what is happening. The ongoing mess in Coronation Park is well documented.
Visitors must think we are aliens who have no regard for our environment. It is no wonder that the universe hits back at us and conjures up Aids, Bird Flu and other medieval-type of diseases to punish us.
