Madam – It is so difficult to find decent employment in smaller towns like Newcastle.
The unemployment rate is steadily getting higher by the day and we have to face facts that there are not enough job opportunities to be had in our town, regardless of qualifications and experience. What hope is there for the new generation who put so much emphasis on education and training?
Gone are the days when you could comfortably rely on a skill to earn a decent living. With the current economy, the price of everything has gone up, while the salaries and wages remain the same or only increase by a nominal amount.
Those that have good jobs are often overworked and underpaid because their companies cannot afford to hire additional people to lessen the workload. This contributes to an economy that places heavy stress on those that are employed.
Too often this means that the breadwinner of the family does not have time to focus on their own mental health and wellbeing. This serves to cut down on family time, holidays and more, because the person is always working and even when not at work, brings work home or even cannot stop thinking about work.
There is always the fear that if you do not give more than 100%, there will be someone waiting in the wings to replace you and often that person comes in with the same skills and is willing to do the job cheaper.
It is indeed dark times we are living in.
