LETTER: Put aside our differences and take care of the less fortunate this winter

Madam – Winter is around the corner and it is time we put aside our differences and prepare to help those who are less fortunate.

It’s not asking for a lot for people to save a couple of cans of food, or maybe an old jacket or jersey. Most of us clean out our wardrobes around this time anyway, and we end up throwing away old clothes that no longer fit us.

There is a better solution – put all your old, but still wearable, clothes into separate black bags. Someone out there would be so grateful to have something clean to wear, no matter the condition.

Once a year, our family goes through the cupboards and do a charity drive.

We encourage all our friends and family to get involved and we usually end up with dozens of bags of clothes that we donate around Newcastle, and the same with food items.

We know for a fact this donation goes a long way towards helping families and individuals who really need it.

Children’s clothes are also always needed. There are quite a few organisations which care for children in town, and clothes and food are always welcome.

Take the opportunity of time that you have now and set aside some of it to consider helping the less fortunate this winter. Your old blankets, shoes, gloves and scarves could be the one thing that saves a person during the colder months.

The best part is that it takes hardly any effort on your part, and you will be blessed ten-fold for your kindness.
