LETTER: How will the refuse disposal system work? – Mayor responds

Are your bags going to have your name on, reason for asking is what if someone in the area come and dump their black bags in front of your yard.

Madam – I read the article about the separation of items in your refuse bags.

I think it is a very good idea and it could work. What I don’t like is the fact that the Mayor says that if refuse is not sorted you can face a R2000 FINE. How is that going to work. Are your bags going to have your name on, reason for asking is what if someone in the area come and dump their black bags in front of your yard.

Furthermore why don’t they just move the dumpsite to Barry Hertzog shopping Centre as it already looks like a dumpsite and the people drinking and urinating there does not mind drinking in such an environment. Or why don’t the Mayor put up a camera there and fine the people that urinate in public, throw rubbish wherever they feel like and use the money to fund the cameras etc.

They can also track the drunken drivers, because most of the accidents in Newcastle originates from these drunk drivers. It’s disgusting to go to that area. I have already closed my post box there after having it for more than 25 years and I used to fill up with petrol there for about 30 years. But NO MORE.

Why must there be people that don’t consider other people. Do they not have pride in our town, because like it’s going on our town is going to be like a dumpsite very soon.

Response from Mayor, Makhosini Nkosi:

Thank you for the opportunity to comment on this letter.

The resident is raising a very important issue on the waste collection. Indeed with any new practice, there will be teething problems. When we start we cannnot be aggressive and unreasonable with the ratepayers.

So the fines will not be unreasonably imposed. We will ensure that our ratepayers are not harassed.
