Editor – I would love to be complimentary about this past weekend’s Ladysmith Show, but I find it slightly difficult.
There is always hype before each year’s show, even among the detractors who are sure to say something like “oh, it’s the same old boring things year after year”.
The show is punted in the media, telling us about the “bigger and better” funfair and fantastic acts lined up to perform. But who among you out there feel that the show has lived up to expectations over the last say five years?
I’m not sure what people are looking for?
Sure, if you have kids, then it’s a great (if slightly expensive) way to entertain them for a weekend. Young lovers can stroll around, hand in hand, and steal a kiss at the top of the Ferris Wheel.
But are the adults happy with what the show churns out?
The Indian community always seem to flock to the Saturday night bhangra extravaganza – that always seems to be a sure-fire hit.
As far as the musicians who perform, I would personally like to see some edgier entertainment on offer. Afrikaans rock is huge in this country at the moment.
I’m referring to acts like ‘Polisiekar, Francois van Coke, Heuwels Fantasties, aKing, Jan Blohm, Karen Zoid and a host of others that can really set the stage alight.
I would like to see some of these names at our show.
The Newcastle Show boasted with Francois van Coke last year, so why can’t we do the same? Are they too expensive for us? I realise this is just my personal preference, so I am interested in how many other people out there share my point of view.
Write in and let everyone take notice!
Aside from the music, the stalls seem to sell an endless variety of toys, novelties, clothing and of course food.
What else can be added to the equation? I’m also interested in other people’s input in this respect as well.
Overall, I was not too impressed with the show, but haven’t given up hope that it could be really spectacular. Maybe that’s just me!
