Editor – An advert from Alfred Duma Local Municipality (ADLM) appeared in the Gazette dated March 2, advertising that the public participation process for a cellular tower on private property (an incorrect address) would be closing on March 2.
I emailed the MM about this oversight and the community surrounding Egerton School signed a petition objecting to a process ‘advertised and closed’ on the same day.
I delivered the petition, with over 300 signatures, to the speaker on the MM’s instructions on March 15.
Some interested members of the community had wished to inspect the application and its accompanying documents, but were unable to find the advertised address in the Lister Clarence Building (all objection letters should in fact be delivered to 29 Keate Street, the second floor too).
The ADLM advert again reappeared in the Gazette on April 24 with the correct address for the cellular tower, this time being Quick Street, but the municipal addresses for sighting of the document were again advertised incorrectly.
This was again brought to the speaker and MM’s attention via email.
I was called to a rapid response meeting on May 4, where the municipality promised to investigate further and that correct procedures would be followed. D-Day is on Friday, June 1, 2018.
While wanting and needing to be technologically advanced, the health and well-being of our children cannot be compromised by business at any cost.
Scholars and the community do not want a health hazard emanating harmful rays directly into their primary school’s playground and classrooms.
