Concerning the tragic accident on Mpati on page four in last week’s Courier, when will something be done to tackle the high rate of accidents on Mpati Hill?
I am only saying this because I am one of the many residents of Caterall Road and Mcphail Drive.
It’s not due to the setting winter sun blinding the driver, its the fact that he, along with many others ignore the double white line the entire length of Mpati… and, its a blind rise where this accident occurred. Can the Transport Department or RTI not enforce a rule of no overtaking on this hill?
I personally have had numerous close calls on this hill with exactly the same problem. When will the injury/death toll be high enough for them to do something?
And while we are on the subject of traffic, who in the municipality’s engineering department (if we still have one) has the vision to see that Dundee’s roads have long used up their longevity.
The vehicle population has probably trebled since 1994 yet our poor road infrastructure remains. The outdated traffic circles are a menace as no one knows or cares to know how to use them.
Hundreds of heavy vehicles thunder through the central business district day and night – destroying roads. There is no traffic control to speak of. Union Street is hopelessly outdated and needs a double lane like McKenzie Street has.
The traffic circles must be changed into dynamic roadways. A by-pass is needed for huge vehicles. Victoria Street, going past the taxi rank, is a nightmare.
This is the most littered area in town and on the main tourist route to the battlefields. Pedestrians walk aimlessly across the road and seem to purposely ignore the green man and cross when the red man shines. The Helpmekaar road disaster has been well documented. The huge speed humps have been cut down but are still unacceptable. There are no warning signs or paint to highlight these humps. Clearly, a visionary engineer is needed to come up with a plan to make Dundee safe and attractive again. Do we have such people left?
