LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Support local runners for the comrades

I don't think many realise just how much training and mental preparation goes into taking part in a race of this kind. You have to eat well and be disciplined and determined at least from a year in advance.

Madam – I want to encourage Newcastle people to support local by watching the Comrades Marathon this weekend and cheering on local runners!

For many, it’s hard enough to stay dedicated to reaching even the simplest of goals, but for marathon runners there is so much more to preparing for a race than just exercising. You have to be physically and mentally fit to take on a challenge like the Comrades.

I know many people think watching the race is boring or a waste of time, but you will never know how much racers appreciate support from their home town and the crowds that gather along the route to cheer them on.

That level of pride and recognition could essentially be the difference between completing the race or giving up.

Each year, my family and I try to take a road trip to Pietermaritzburg or Durban to support local racers and the feedback we get afterwards makes the sacrifice worth it. Some of the runners along the way are spurred to better their times because of the support and encouragement they get along the way.

When you watch on television, you can actually see how supportive the atmosphere is with races like the Comrades Marathon. There are always local runners taking part, so I urge you to find out who they are and give them words of encouragement for the race this weekend.

Running that distance is not easy and not everyone can do it or completes it. It is truly something to be proud of and an achievement you will be enjoying for many years to come.

To those who are taking part this year: All the best and good luck!
