Mr Ramautar, head swimming coach of Newcastle Swimming Club and portfolio for swimming development, has taken the responsibility of teaching 20 Newcastle High School pupils how to swim and reach their full aquatic potential.

“Their skills range from beginner, intermediate to advanced and there is a lot of potential in them,” he said.

While teaching the children how to swim was the main purpose of the lessons, Mr Ramautar said involving schools in swimming was a great way to promote the sport and the Newcastle Swimming Club as a whole.

Through the youngsters’ participation, Mr Ramautar hoped to develop swimming as a popular sport in Newcastle.

“It is also important for schools to get involved, as swimming is part of their curriculum,” he said.
