Vryheid Luremasters – Bivane Bass Challenge coming up
The Bivane Bass Challenge hosted by the Vryheid Luremasters will be held on May 23 and 24. This is one of the main events in each bass angler’s diary. THE drought has been broken by good catches in Gerald Ford’s Dam in the league held on April 11.
Not a bumper crop, but fair results and a very good bass was caught by Zane Formo, which tipped the scale at 3.060kg. A whopper in every bass angler diary. Second prize went to AJ Mohunram with a respectable bass of 1.765kg and the junior division was led with a bass of 0.460kg caught by W de Wett. Thank you Gerald for letting the club fish in this beautiful dam.
The fishing in general is poor in and around Vryheid and the wisest thing was to move the league to Gluckstadt and surrounding area. While fishing is poor in the bass section, the good news is that Bloemveld Dam is gathering water at a steady pace. The overflow from Grootgewacht dam is bolstering Bloemveld resources and that would mean that all the farm dams in this system are full.
Unfortunately, so many other dams which fall within the jurisdiction of the Luremasters have no water and it is of the greatest concern how these dams will survive during the harsh winter with little or no rain. Please anglers, please release all fish caught to ensure that the population is harnessed in whatever water is left with the advent of spring.

The main prize is R20 000-00 for the biggest bass. Entry fee is R900 per boat with two anglers per boat. Experience the feel with pro-anglers in this competition and your family is welcome to join in this beautiful setting. Camping sites are top notch and security is of a high standard. Last year the biggest bass weighed in at 4.8kg but bigger fish have been caught before. We hope that all interested parties will show on the day.
The club will have a long awaited weekend in the mountains around Utrecht at Balele Mountain Lodge trout from June 19 to 21. There are seven dams are waiting for eager fly-fisherman well stocked with rainbow and brown trout. At the price of R200.00 including charcoal, it is a steal! You can drive there, with food and fly tackle and the accommodation and the fire is paid for. It is a steal and for another R200.00 you can fish in the top dam. Trout easily gets to 7kg here. Call Paul Steffenson immediately as the amount of anglers is pegged at only 10.
