Matthew kicking for gold
The 17-year-old was chosen to represent Africa at the International Student Convention in the United States in May this year.
With the opportunity to bring international glory to Newcastle, Matthew Ewart is seeking assistance from the community.
The 17-year-old was chosen to represent Africa at the International Student Convention in the United States in May this year.
Matthew was selected for the opportunity last October at the All Africa Convention in Bloemfontein, after he tied for first place during the goal kick division of the tournament.
“The soccer kick is when you stand 10 metres away from the goal posts and kick the ball in. The ball is not allowed to bounce before the goal line and every time you score, you step back an extra five metres,” Matthew explained.
Matthew secured his place after scoring goals from 45 meters away from the goal posts.
While excited about the upcoming trip to the United States, Matthew is seeking sponsorships as the trip is set to cost him R58 000.
“I have managed to raise some funds, as I have had sponsorships from some businesses and private people,” he said.
However, he still requires about R 48 000.
“I have also been doing part time work during the holidays in an attempt to raise funds for the trip.”
With the event a mere three months away, Matthew is truly looking forward to the excursion.
“I am so excited that I am actually counting the days down.”
