Jayant goes city-to-city for charity

The walk will raise much-needed funds through donations to aid the learners at the school who dropped out due to financial reasons

Jayant Valab is out ‘walking his talk’ for a worthy cause.

The 55-year-old has taken on a 720km walk from Johannesburg to Durban to invest in child education. You may have spotted him and his support vehicle passing through Estcourt last week.

He is an educator with 17 years’ experience and is currently a Sanskrit educator at St James Preparatory School in Johannesburg. Mr Valab embarked on his city-to-city charity walk on Women’s Day.

He has taken on elements of cold, heat, mist, wind and rain as he strives to be a real life example to his learners. On August 9, some parents walked the first 5kms with Mr Valab as he began his walk from the school. He has taught every grade from grade 0 to grade seven at the school.

“I decided to make a difference, and with walking being my passion, I thought why not do something extraordinary by walking from Johannesburg to Durban for the school,” said Mr Valab.

He firmly believes in the value-based system and said: “Along the way, morals and values have been lost. Children are denied human values of compassion, morality and integrity.

“We need to teach courage, fortitude and bravery by real examples. Great virtues like respect, kindness and dignity are practiced less and less nowadays.”

With the walk, he hopes to inspire others to pursue their goals. He wants to prove that anything is possible when you put your mind to it and to reinstall morals and values in his learners. He added that it takes a lot of bravery, mental and physical strength.

The walk will raise much-needed funds through donations to aid the learners at the school who dropped out due to financial reasons.

With very few sponsors and a pacemaker fitted into Mr Valab’s chest to normalise his heart rhythms; nothing and no one has gotten in the way of his cause. Mr Valab’s walk will end on the day school opens for the last term of the year.

Your donation will afford learners an opportunity to a better education and brighter future. If you would like to make a contribution, here are the banking details:
