BOWLS REPORT: Singles bowlers set for district clashes

The Steele quartet – Douglas, Michelle, Lindsay and Monty made it a good weekend for Newcastle bowlers by also finishing on the podium in third place.

A number of Newcastle teams travelled to Vryheid last weekend, to take part in Vryheid Bowling Club’s annual Spring Tournament.

After the first day’s play, the leader board was congested, making Sunday’s play vital for all the teams in contention.

After a couple more games on Sunday, the local team of Phillip Scheepers, John Cross, Soon Moolman and Nolan Malan were declared the winners, with the Newcastle team of Ron Howe, Alice Howe, Adrian van der Merwe and Vicky van der Merwe in second place.

The Spring Business League, starting in October, is almost fully subscribed to and another eight weeks of fun is envisaged on the greens.

Members are reminded that annual subs are now due and payment must be made before the end of September.

Ron Howe and Eleen Roux, the Newcastle Club Singles champions, will participate in the District Champion of Champions this weekend at Empangeni Bowling Club, and both are wished good bowling.
