THE cricket season is in full swing and the Promotion League began on Sunday, with Zululand taking on Amajuba at Vryheid Cricket Club.

Zululand won the toss and decided to bowl, but couldn’t keep the pressure on the batsmen and, at 112 for 2 and 236 for 5, it looked like the Newcastle team’s score would be out of reach. Newcastle were eventually bowled out for 257 with a flurry of wickets at the end. Andrew Brooks took 5 wickets and Clifford Dougherty took 3.

The two youngest members of the side, Andrew Vorster and Joshua Stoltenkamp were at the crease for the session after lunch and the two schoolboys showed grit and determination to give Zululand a chance to win the game. Andrew and Josh rebuilt the innings with a hard working 130 run partnership, both making half centuries with 58 and 75 runs respectively.

With 101 needed off the last 11 overs, the Zululand team needed to take the bull by the horns and subsequently went after Amajuba’s bowling.
But was it enough? Get your hands on a copy of this week’s Vryheid Herald for the full report, submitted by Vryheid Cricket Club to find out.
