Angling: Rivals battle in the deep water

The semi-finals of the Angling Professional League (APL) Knock Out came to Richgate Park on February 3.

This was a highly competitive event, boasting a seasoned top four contenders.

Following the prior Knock Out Eliminator and the drawing of competition zones, the match-ups saw Ladysmith Angling Club against Challengers AC and Breakwaters AC against sister club Stillwaters.

Scoring 99 points, Breakwaters was first to advance.

The duel between Ladysmith and Challengers seemed destined for an upset, although the visitors managed 120 points to win, ahead of the 97 of Challengers.

Breakwaters and Ladysmith will now contest the Transnat KO title on March 10.

The Angler of the Day was Ebrahim Mia of Challengers, who amassed 40 individual points to secure the red cap, cash prize and outright trophy.

His impressive haul included a number of large barbels.

However, the biggest barbel of the day went to Stillwaters’ Harold Verwey, whose catch tipped the scales at a monstrous 13,55 kilograms.

The fish was released to fight another day.

The top five anglers for Breakwaters and Stillwaters were Ronnie Rampersadh (18 points), Werner Pieterse (14 points), Oosie Oosthuizen (14 points), Harold Verwey (14 points) and Shakeel Sheik (10 points.
