Highlanders lose their spot in Jimmy Stonehouse 10’s tournament

Unfortunately, Highlanders ended on the same combined log points as Lydenburg, causing them to lose their spot in the semi-finals.

The Newcastle Boschpick Highlanders, unfortunately, lost their semi-final spot in the Jimmy Stonehouse 10’s Tournament after losing 40-0 to Nelspruit this past Saturday (March 16).

Although the Highlanders started like a house on fire, their victorious streak in the tournament came to an abrupt end. In their first pool game, they beat Ermelo 35-0 and followed this up with a 35-5 victory over Hazyview.

However, the tables turned in the third pool game, and Nelspruit ran out victorious.

Unfortunately, Highlanders ended on the same combined log points as Lydenburg, causing them to lose their spot in the semi-finals due to a point difference.

Highlanders’ Andrè ‘Swannie’ Swanepoel, said they were happy with their players’ fitness, considering the games were played in 40-degree weather conditions with a mere 20-minute rest in between their matches.

Swanepoel thanked the Puma Rugby Union for hosting such a well-organised tournament.

“The organisers should be commended for their efforts and uplifting club rugby in general. While 19 players attended the tournament in Nelspruit, a squad of 23 players played in Volksrust against Volksrust Rugby Club.

“Although the Highlanders lost 29-21, it was great to see so many players at the club in an ‘away game’,” said Swanepoel.

The Highlanders will travel to Vrede this coming weekend to play Vrede Rugby Club at the Vrede High School Sports Grounds.
