Athletes shatter provincial records
Several athletes excelled at recent provincial competitions.

A popular quote states ‘through discipline, we prevail’. If the achievements of a small group of middle distance athletes are anything to go by, they are reaping the rewards of determined and focused training. Coach, Andries du Preez is thus a very proud man.
Together, the team of Driaan de Clercq, Marike Roos, Liam Gray, Karmi Gouws and Johandre Buitendach attended the KwaZulu-Natal Junior Club Athletics Championships in Durban in late October, earning a number of podium finishes. Equally impressive, is the number of records the athletes shattered.
Carmi broke the provincial record in the 600-metre under-nine girls event, while Liam finished third in the boys’ event after bettering the current KZN record. In the u-13 boys 800m, Johandre’s first place also improved the record. Marike ended in the silver position in the u/15 girls 800m in a new record time, before comfortably beating all challengers in the 500m event. Driaan finished third in the 800m u-15 boys event and second in the 500m.
“With these athletes, they are coached throughout the year and not just for a few weeks. This is the result of a year’s training,” enthused Mr du Preez.
These athletes have since continued training for the Inter-Provincial leg of competition, set for Potchefstroom on November 23. Anyone who is interested in taking up the sport, can contact Mr du Preez on 083 304 0278 for more information.
