Great round to start the year

Saturday, January 18, sees the first Monthly Mug of 2014, sponsored by Durban Overall

The 2014 sporting year at the Ladysmith Country Club had a great start on Saturday afternoon with the ‘New Year Trophy’ golf competition and also a bowls competition to set the year off.

The weather was very kind to all the competitors, with some welcome cloud cover and a gentle breeze. With the recent rains and the excellent summer weather, the golf course and bowling green are in superb condition, as the scores returned on Saturday reflect.

The golf competition, played as an Individual Stableford event, was won by Gary McMaster with an absolutely brilliant score of 46 points. Gary played the round of his life, especially on the back nine, where he scored an incredible 27 points (even 3s) and a gross score of 39. This off a 25 handicap! Well, as they say in the classics, when it runs for you, just take all you get and enjoy it. Well done, Gary, and you can boast as being the proud winner of the New Year Trophy for 2014. Runner-up with an excellent score of 41 points was Noel Hoffman, followed by Bheki Mbokasi with 39 points on a count-out from Wayne Bentley and Brett Cuninghame. ‘Nearest the Pin’ winners were Dries Slabbert, Sifiso Mdluli, Charles Elworthy and Stephen van Tonder, with Wayne Bentley winning the ‘Longest Putt’ prize at the 18th hole. Stephen van Tonder, Pier Turconi, Retief Marais, Noel Hoffman and Leon Petersen carded two-clubs.

The bowls competition, played as a 2-4-2 nominated pairs event, was won by Ettienne de Pindray and Peter Landsdale, with second place going to Cheryl Mostert and Padma Magan and third place to Kurt Swoboda and Veronika Schuler.

Thanks to Pier and Glynnis Turconi for the sponsorship of this annual event, the first of the New Year, for the 11th year running. Thanks also to Ian Pitman and Mobile Merchant for the sponsorship of the novelty prizes.

Saturday, January 18, sees the first Monthly Mug of 2014, sponsored by Durban Overall.

Thursday, January 23, sees the start of the Business League, sponsored by Ferobrake, and Saturday the 25th is the Ladysmith Pharmacy Golf Day.

Mortimer Toyota League team captains, please note that there will be a captains’ meeting at the club on Wednesday, January 22, at 5.30pm to finalise teams and arrangements for the 2014 season. The first round of the league is scheduled for Sunday, February 23, and we look forward to a full entry and another year of very competitive team match-play golf.
