Burnt End
Playing in the KZNCB Senior Fours play-offs, the Newcastle ladies’ and men’s teams did well to finish as runners-up in their respective sections.
Dorothy Crosby, Phyllis Reis, Edith Pretorius & Marie Botha won their first four games and then lost to the eventual winners, Yvonne Steenkamp and the team from Richards Bay who were unbeaten in the tournament.
Sid Price, Koen Pretorius, Andy Crosby and Bert Rodgers also won four of their five games, but were narrowly beaten on a count out by Vryheid’s Hogart Gevers and team, who had earlier lost to Sid’s team and got home to win the title with a better shot difference.
The FedAuto meat competition played at the beginning of the month was won by Henk Zaal, Esther Willemse and Mike Martens (9 + 9) with the runner-up spot going to Des Thompson, Gert Roos, Colin Broderick and Alex Zaal (8 + 1).
The All Natal Mens & Ladies Pairs Championships started in Pietermarizburg last weekend. The Northerns combinations of Nan Roos and Sylvia Malan from Dundee are still doing well, and will be progressing to the semi final in their section.
John Cross and Nolan Malan from Vryheid won their section and have moved through to the quarter finals.
