Vryheid Rugby Club – Seconds on form with yet another win

FOLLOWING a phenomenal win against Newcastle last weekend, Vryheid Rugby Club’s second team appears to be growing quite accustomed to the sweet taste of victory.

The sensational seconds defeated Ladysmith United in an away game on Saturday, with the scoreboard showing 26 – 19 in favour of Vryheid at the close of play.

On Friday night the first team, once more missing some key players and plagued with injuries, travelled to Pongola where they went head to head with the local team. Their attempts at a win, however, were thwarted by the opposition as the final score was 26 – 21 in favour of the home team.

According to comments on social media by team captain, Wessie Van Der Westhuyzen, the game was by no means a walkover for the hosts, with the Vryheid team working together to put up a good fight against the Pongola team.

“Ek is vandag een trotse Vryheid rugby speler.” stated the captain. “Aan my eerstespanmaats en coach, ons het gisteraand vir die eerste keer as ‘n span saam gestaan en vir die eerste keer afgestap, met ‘n verloor dalk ja, maar ‘n smile op ons gesigte.” Van Der Westhuyzen added, “Dit was n great game en ons kan net voorentoe gaan met dit. Die gees is great en die liefde vir mekaar is seker die sterkste ooit. Ek is trots op julle boys! Sien julle Dinsdag (practice). Kom ons bou die span na greatness!”

Vryheid Rugby Club will host their match against the formidable Piet Retief team on Friday night with the second team kicking off at 6:30pm and the first team match starting at 8:00pm. Following the tremendous public support at the previous match against Newcastle, Vryheid Rugby Club is looking forward to another great turnout this weekend with the home crowd cheering from the stands and sidelines when they face the mighty Piet Retief team.
