Playing on slick but true greens proved to be a challenge for many of the bowlers who battled to adjust to the speed.
Bowlers still managed to put on a great performance and enjoyed the Volksrust hospitality.
The men’s winners were Phillip Scheepers and Hogart Gevers from Vryheid Bowling Club with Russel Morgan and Brian Scott (Richards Bay Bowling Club) the runners up.
Richards Bay ladies made a clean sweep in their section with Anita Scott and Jane Douglas winning the title, and club mates, Ronel Greef and Essel Schoeman finishing second.
On the local front, Billy Nicholas and Stephen Shaw became the club pairs champions when they defeated Ron Howe and Bert Rodgers in the finals.
In the club monthly chicken competition played last Saturday, the prizes were won by Frans Schoon, Andy Robinson and Marie Botha.
The South African Pairs Championships also got under way in the Ekhurleni (Benoni/Boksburg) region last weekend.
Playing in the pairs championships, Trevor Smale and Anil Durgadin, and John and Trevor Douthwaite did well to win four of their five games, both teams narrowly losing one game and just missing out on qualifying for the sectional playoffs.
In the ladies championships played in Port Elizabeth, Nan Roos and Noela Dreyer (Dundee) won their section which included a couple of Protea pairs, and have now qualified for the play-offs.
