Keen edge to single bowlers
The zone winners and runners-up of the Open and Senior Ladies’ and Men’s Singles Championships from the Midlands, Zululand and Northern zones travelled to Mtunzini last weekend for the KwaZulu-Natal Country Bowling (KZNCB) regional play-offs.

Play was of a high standard and competition very keen, with no one winning all their games.
The top two finishers in the Senior event, and the top four in the Open events, now qualify for the SA Nationals competition, to be held later this year.
Newcastle’s Ron Howe (8 + 30) overcame a single loss on Saturday out of the three games played, to win both his games on Sunday to finish ahead of overnight leader, Braam van Zyl of Harrismith (6 + 21), to record a deserved victory in the Open division.
The Ladies Open division was won by Anita Scott of Richards Bay (8 + 37), with Nan Roos of Dundee (6 + 15) the runner-up.
The Ladies Senior title went to Veronica Malan of Klipbank (8 + 33), with Joey Evans of Richards Bay (8 + 23) in second place.
Richards Bay’s Barry Mutlow (8 + 45) won the Men’s Senior title, with Bennie Malan of Klipbank (8 + 12) the runner-up.
The popular FedAuto Summer Business League gets under way this Thursday evening, with a record entry of 42 teams.
Support received from the sponsors and all the participating teams is greatly appreciated by the Newcastle Bowling Club.
The annual KZNCB Masters tournament is to be played in Newcastle next weekend, and members are requested to volunteer as markers, to assist with the smooth running of this competition.
Members are also reminded that the entry lists for the Northern Zone Pairs and Mixed Pairs are on the notice board.
