The club recently competed in the South African Cadet and Senior Championships in Brakpan, in the quest to dominate wrestlers from across the country.

The two-day event kicked off on July 1, with Liza Chan, Eric de Wet, Danie de Wet and Maryna Janse van Rensburg sinking their claws into their opponents.

Maryna secured a gold medal, while Eric clinched two bronze medals. Danie took a silver and was awarded two gold medals in the Coaching division.

While the three wrestlers did Newcastle proud, it was Liza who came home with the ultimate victory. She won the Women’s division and was crowned the South African champion.

“This was the first time in 18 years anyone from Newcastle won the South African championships,” said Lizzy de Wet of the wrestling club.

For Liza this was a great privilege.

“It is a huge honour for me, as I have been training for two years and not many people get so far so quickly,” she beamed.

Now as the reigning South African champion, Liza is determined to ensure she stays in top form.

“I do crossfit at gym, weights, running and exercise at the club. Now, I will have to train harder and become more disciplined,” she concluded.
