Scorpions have the last sting on the golf course
The much younger Wessie van der Westhuizen must be mentioned for his outstanding win over the courageous efforts of the much older Bullets captain
The final round of the Mortimer Toyota league was played over the weekend, which saw The Rough Riders qualify for their third straight final in a row. Three teams had to wait for the final match to finish to determine who would qualify for the other spot in the finals.
The Scorpions took full advantage, firing off a salvo of warning shots to the other contenders and The Rough Riders by taking six points from their match against the blown away Bullets.
The much younger Wessie van der Westhuizen must be mentioned for his outstanding (against all odds) win over the courageous efforts of the much older Bullets captain. This astonishing win ensured that they managed to leapfrog into second place by just a single point, from the Cloverleaf Titans and Team Golf, who both recorded solid victories themselves.
The new kids on the block, The Cobras, had a very topsy turvy season and while they managed to scalp a few big names, they never really got to grips with the physicality and speed of the game. Their captain said that a lot of positives can be taken from the season and for a side that has only been together for a few months, while the other teams had been together a lot longer, the signs were encouraging.
TEAM PROFILE: THE CLOVERLEAF TITANS
The Cloverleaf Titans have become a force to be reckoned with and have improved on last year’s performance by finishing just one point out of the playoffs, in third place.
The team has been ably led by Philip Boardman and they are driven by caffeine, judging by the amount of coffee they consume before tee-off. They should perhaps be co-sponsored by The Coffee Shop.
Prescott Sishange – Mr “Espresso”, as he is the ou who expresses himself the most.
Sipho Hlongwa – Mr “Mocha”, as he plays so well that he makes a “mochary” of the game.
Ntokozo Cebekhulu – Mr “Cappuccino” and always looks smart in his cap and chino longs.
Bheki Mbokazi – Mr “Americano”, as he is a merry ou who can play golf.
Philip Boardman – the man who has blended this variety of “beans” into a smooth and strong brew worth watching out for.
