Highlanders stand immortal against Vryheid

The most valuable player of the match was Gunza Motloung (lock) who enjoyed a ‘storming’ game, and Hendrik Grobler (flanker) was the pick of the forward pack.

Boschpick Newcastle Highlanders dispatched two teams to do battle against Vryheid on Saturday.

These clashes were part of the ongoing Northern KwaZulu-Natal League, and Highlanders management were satisfied at its performance on the field.

The afternoon began with a clash of the second teams. Despite the vast experience of the Vryheid II, Highlanders II hit the ground running and scored six tries en route to a convincing 35 – 10 victory.

Vryheid earned itself one consolation try in return.

Highlanders flanker (7), Mlu Phakkati was the Man of the Match for the forwards, while fullback Jaco Laing (15) was the best backline player.

The Highlanders First Team dominated play from the kick-off.

Putting all doubts aside, Highlanders I went into the shed at half time 17 – 5 ahead, scoring another four tries in the second half, to put the match to bed.

The final score was 43 – 20.

“Highlanders’ forwards provided very good ball to the backline. The backline players scored six of the eight tries and Bonga Zulu [left wing] scored a hat trick,” said Highlanders Head Coach, Andrè Swanepoel.

The most valuable player of the match was Gunza Motloung (lock) who enjoyed a ‘storming’ game, and Hendrik Grobler (flanker) was the pick of the forward pack.

Andre Lategan (fullback) was the best backline player.
