Ladysmith High School (LHS) Grade 11 learner and first-team rugby player Philasande Shezi (17) has earned a place on the Stallions Italy Rugby Tour 2026 after impressing selectors at a provincial rugby tournament held in Port Shepstone from March 31 to April 1.

The tour to Italy will take place from December 5-13, providing young players with an opportunity to compete internationally and gain valuable rugby experience.

Determined to become a professional rugby player

Shezi, who plays in the fullback position, said he is thrilled about the opportunity to travel overseas and play the sport he loves.

“I am very happy and excited that I have been selected to play rugby overseas. Rugby is my passion and I don’t just want to play the game, I want to achieve great things and become a professional rugby player,” he said.

As part of the tour, the team will play three matches, participate in coaching clinics led by Italian coaches, and attend two self-led training sessions, giving players valuable exposure to international rugby standards.

Appeal for financial assistance

Despite his achievement, Shezi requires financial assistance to make the tour possible. He needs to raise approximately R70,000 before October to cover all travel and tour-related expenses.

He is appealing to businesses, organisations and members of the public to support his journey and help him represent his community and South Africa on the international stage.
