Hard-hitting Haywood makes light work of Mondlo bowlers

In the Zulu-Land T20 Challenge on Saturday afternoon, the Gladiators faced off against Mondlo at Cecil Emmett Park. Gladiators won the toss and elected to open the batting.

Graham Haywood made light work of the Mondlo bowling attack with 65 runs off 50 deliveries, including 11 boundaries during his innings, before being caught at the boundary off the bowling of Mondlo’s Thulani Zwane. Phillip Venter was dismissed, bowled by Siyabonga Zulu, with only eight runs to his name, off two fours.

Johannes Kruger scored 16 runs, including two fours, before losing his wicket to the bowling of Zulu as well. After racking up 28 runs for Gladiators, including two monumental sixes, Jacques Sander went out LBW to Thulani Zwane.

Wessel Vorster and Cameron Aitken scored 10 and 21 respectively and Gladiators set the target for Mondlo with 191/4 at the end of their 20 overs.

Wicket takers for Mondlo were Siyabonga Zulu, who took two wickets in his four overs for 38 runs and Thulani Zwane, who also took two wickets for 30 runs in his allotted four overs.

Mondlo headed off to bat next, with opening batsmen, Thokozani Zondo and Mthunzi Dlodlo top scoring for their team. Zondo put 11 runs on the board before losing his wicket to the bowling of Jacques Sander, while Dlodlo’s innings, including three fours and two glorious sixes, resulted in another 35 runs off 46 deliveries, before being bowled out by Corné Bosman.

Double figures eluded the remaining Mondlo batsmen as their wickets toppled for the rest of the twenty overs. Thokozani Shongwe went for nine runs until he was caught and bowled by Wessel Vorster. Siyabonga Zulu lost his wicket to the bowling of Wessel Vorster off the first delivery, without putting a run on the board. Corné Bosman bowled out Mandla Khanyile for only five runs and Msizi Khumalo was stumped for eight runs off the bowling of Michael Barry in his debut appearance for the Gladiators side. Thulani Zwane managed a boundary, putting four runs on the board for Mondlo, before being dismissed LBW by Johannes Kruger. Vukile Zwane scored two runs, not out and S Shabalala was not out for one run.

Wicket takers for the Gladiators squad were Jacques Sander, who took a single wicket for 13 runs in his four overs, Wessel Vorster, with two wickets for thirteen runs in his four overs and Corné Bosman, with two wickets for three runs in his two overs. Johannes Kruger took a single wicket in his over for nine runs and Michael Barry bowled two overs in his debut match, taking one wicket for nine runs.

Mondlo were unable to chase down the target set by the Gladiators and finished their twenty overs at 95/7.
On Sunday, Vryheid’s Pak CC faced Wicket Wasps on the pitch at Cecil Emmett Park in a 50 over match. Pak CC won the toss and went in to bat.

Opening batsman, Munawar Mirza top scored for the Pak CC team with 24 runs off 21 balls before being bowled out by Shane Pennington. Kashif Hussain was the only other batsman to make it into the twenties, putting 23 runs on the board before losing his wicket, LBW, to John Bevan. Imran Anwar and Ikhlaq Ahmed scored 14 and 10 respectively before Anwar was bowled out by Jaco Davel and Ahmed was bowled by John Bevan.

It took the Wasps only 21.1 of the fifty overs to decimate the Pak CC batting line up, restricting them to 104, all out.
Bowling figures for the Wicket Wasps saw Shane Pennington bowl six overs, taking three wickets for 32 runs. In his 3.1 overs, Karl-Johann Ewert took a single wicket for 15 runs and Jaco Davel bowled five overs, taking one wicket for 23 runs. It was John Bevan who stood out for the Wasps, however, taking five wickets in his seven overs for 34 runs.

Wicket Wasps went in to bat and opening batsman, Adriaan Kruger faced only ten deliveries and scoring a single run before losing his wicket, LBW off the bowling of Naeem Sadiq. Juan Booyens scored 59 off 30 balls, including twelve fours and a six in his innings, before being bowled out by Munawar Mirza. Waldo Nel added six runs before going out LBW to Kashif Hussain and Divan de Roubaix and Karl-Johann Ewert added 14 and 13 runs to the total respectively, not out.

Naeem Sadiq, Kashif Hussain and Munawar Mirza were the wicket takers for Pak CC, with one wicket each.
Wicket Wasps reached the target set by Pak CC with relative ease and won the match, 108/3 in less than 14 overs.

At the Dumbe Oval, Vryheid’s Mr X faced Dumbe in what was meant to be a 50 over match, described as the “first big clash of the season” as the two teams who shared the 50 over trophy last season went head to head. The match was reduced twice, due to rain, which saw Dumbe only able to bat 40 overs, ten shy of the scheduled 50. In their 40 overs, they racked up a massive 312/9. Mr X was unable to chase down the target, scoring 130/7 in 25 overs, not enough to put a damper on Dumbe.

Dumbe defeated Mr X by a devastating 182 runs, according to the Duckworth-Lewis method, a mathematical formulation designed to calculate the target score for the team batting second in a limited overs cricket match interrupted by weather or other circumstances.
