Wrestler grapples his way to All-Africa Championships

Nollie's selection for the team is the result of grit, determination and training.

While many were lying the sun, enjoying the Christmas break, Mundell ‘Nollie’ Brown was working out in the gym every evening, following a day of back-breaking road work, tyre flips and box jumping.

Nollie (16) only has January 25 in his mind. That is the day the South African Wrestling team jets out to Algeria to compete in the All-Africa Wrestling Championships.

The Dundee lad has been selected to carry the South African flag in the 92kg freestyle division. His road to selection has not been easy however.

His father, Steven, himself a highly decorated South African wrestler and coach, recalled that when Nollie started out in the sport in 2013, KZN Wrestling was battling to survive.

“At that time, there were only a few wrestlers in the province. That’s when KZN Wrestling approached Orange Grove Dairy for assistance and this led to the birth of a great sponsorship that helped create a new dynamic in wrestling,” Steven told the Courier.

“A lot of hard work has been put into this program and the initiative is starting to bear fruit. Together we can certainly all make a difference as has been shown in the wrestling ring.”

KZN wrestling did exceptionally well at the National Championships in 2019 and Nollie’s selection came as no surprise.
