Biggarsberg athletes invade Newcastle marathon

Philimon Zondi once again finished first in his age group, showing continual improvement.

A total of 32 members from the Biggarsberg Athletics Club and SAPS Striders invaded Newcastle recently, to take part in the Harcourts Battlefields Marathon. Each athlete gave it their all in the 42 kilometre, 21km, and 10km events.

42km: Philimon Zondi once again finished first in his age group (60+). With a time of 3:32, he showed an improvement from the Volksrust Marathon held in January.

Khethokule Mchunu – 3:48, Zwelihle Duma – 4:00, Sakhile Dlomo – 4:12, Anthony Nkabini – 4:13, Skhumbuzo Moloi – 4:48, Jayrushka Massallia – 5:03, Lendani Vilakazi – 5:12, Smakahle Khumalo – 5:16, Mzwandile Nxumalo – 5:26 and Conrad Labuschagne – 05:35.

21km: Fanie Mthembu – 1:43, Zithulele Nkosi – 1:44, Sipho Dlamini – 1:56, Sonelle Craffert – 1:55, Siya Ngobese – 2:04, Sam Ngobese – 2:10, Jeanette Boshoff – 3:16, Thandolwethu Mthethwa – 3:18, Mbalenhle Mawila – 3:26 and Lewies Boshoff – 3:27.

10km: Sbusiso Magubane – 00:36, Joel Khumalo – 00:38, Sabatha Ndlovu – 00:39, Sphesihle Mncube – 00:39, Saneliswa Mkhize – 00:52, Pinky Qwabe – 01:25, Duduzile Mchunu – 01:52, Thabie Pungula (finished in third position) – 00:49 and Anri Maree – 01:32.

10km walkers: Nxolo Njali-jaji – 01:37, Phindile Ndela – 01:44 and Sandiso Mchunu Jnr – 01:51.

The chairpersons and committee members of both clubs congratulated all local athletes who took part in the Harcourts Battlefield Marathon and who, despite the rain, performed exceptionally. The clubs are proud of each and every member.
