Cricket season kicks off at Lambert Park

Be sure to catch the second round of the 2022/23 league, which starts this Friday

Umtshezi Cricket Association kicked off its 2022/23 season over the weekend (October 15 and 16) at Lambert Park. The opening fixture saw Colita Cricket Club (CC) take on United CC in a T20 night game on Saturday.

United CC batted first and struggled to post a high score, with the Colita bowling attack firing on all cylinders. They were eventually bowled out for 83 runs in the 17th over.

Top performers for United CC were Munir and Mudaser, both scoring 16 runs.

The Colita bowling attack really pulled together some great performances, with Suvedh being the pick of the bowlers by taking four wickets for 15 runs in 3.2 overs. Colita chased down the score in the 13th over, with good performances from father-and-son duo Neelan Iyavoo (scoring 14) and Romendran (scoring 12) to set up the chase.

The best batsman was Suvedh with 21 runs, claiming the ‘Man of the Match’ award for the night. Hence, Colita CC grabbed their first win of the season.

Sunday saw two T20 day games taking place. First up were Farhaan Hardware vs Jes Towing, followed by Aster CC taking on United CC. Farhaan made 150 runs in their 20 overs, with great batting performances. The best batsman was M Ali, scoring 36 runs, helped by Aziz scoring 23 runs and Faizel scoring 21 runs.

Jes Towing only managed to score 138 runs before being bowled out in the 20th over. Naeem top-scored for Jes Towing with 27. Best bowler for Farhaan Hardware was Fuzel, taking three wickets for 30 runs in three overs to help Farhaan Hardware claim their first win.
The last game of the first weekend was Aster CC vs United CC.

United batted first and scored 168 in their 20 overs, mostly due to a one-man performance by Munir, who scored 110 off 55 balls, hitting 14 fours and three sixes. Aster’s best bowlers were Waseem and Sanesh with two wickets each. Aster was unable to chase down the score and were bowled out for 71 after 13 overs.

The best batsman was Shezaad, scoring 30 runs off 15 balls, and United’s best bowler was Mozam with five wickets for 23 runs in four overs. This saw United claiming their first win. It was a great start to the season and the weather held up just enough for the season to get off the mark. Umtshezi Cricket Association encourages cricket lovers to come watch some local talent show off their skills.

October 21 – Aster CC vs Farhaan Hardware at 19:00 (T20 night).
October 22 – Jes Towing vs United CC at 19:00 (T20 night).
October 23 – Colita CC vs Farhaan Hardware at 09:00 (50 overs).
